El FBI solicita la colaboración de Lucinda Pond (Jeanne Tripplehorn), una ex-agente del cuerpo, para intentar localizar al autor de una serie de asesinatos que presuntamente podría haber cometido su hermano. Lucinda, que dejó la policía años atrás, decide ayudar a regañadientes convencido por un antiguo novio (Leland Orser). Las pistas están directamente relacionadas con los malos tratos que Lucinda y su hermano sufrieron durante su infancia, lo que parece ser ha provocado en el sospechoso un grave trastorno psicológico.
