Al final de la Guerra Civil, tres soldados confederados escapan de un campo de prisioneros de la Unión en Missouri. No tardaron en caer en manos de los invasores pro-confederados, que les obligan a actuar como "escoltas" para una caravana civil en la que se transporta en secreto oro de la Unión de Santa Fe, Nuevo México, a St. Louis, Missouri. Los tres hombres han de llevar los vagones hacia una trampa en Missouri, pero uno de ellos comienza a tener dudas...
