El grupo fue fundado en 1978 por Andy McCluskey (voz principal y bajo eléctrico) y Paul Humphreys (sintetizador, coros y, ocasionalmente, voz). Hasta 2017 han publicado 13 álbumes de estudio, aunque su canción más famosa, «Enola Gay», es un tema antibelicista publicado en 1980 Souvenir es la historia de una de las bandas de synth-pop más influyentes de todos los tiempos.
