Adaptación de la obra teatral homónima del noruego Henrik Ibsen. Ray ambienta la trama en un pueblo de Bengala: en un municipio próspero, un templo atrae a devotos y turistas. Cuando el honrado e intachable doctor Ashok Gupta (Soumitra Chatterjee) detecta un problema relacionado con la salud pública, que alejaría el turismo del lugar, tropieza con la hostilidad de autoridades y vecinos.
