Los integrantes de la REF (Fuerza Expedicionarias Robotech) han aprendido la lección y no quieren que su amado planeta sea destruido nuevamente. Es por ello que se desarrolla la nueva fortaleza espacial que cumplirá la misión de librar la batalla lejos de La Tierra: El SDF-3. Al mando de Rick Hunter la nueva nave emprende el largo viaje a Tirol, luna gigante del planeta Fantoma, con la misión de hallar la base enemiga y librar la batalla definitiva.
