Nick Halloway (Chevy Chase) es un analista financiero muy jovial y divertido que conoce a Alice Monroe (Daryl Hannah), una atractiva rubia de la que se enamora. Un día Nick, estando en un laboratorio, es víctima de un accidente que le convierte en invisible. Cuando el agente del gobierno David Jenkins (Sam Neill) conoce la existencia de Nick, intenta recrutarlo como agente de espionaje para la CIA.
