Norte de Sudán, verano de 1923. El rey Alfonso XIII de España captura un enorme elefante africano, un acto aparentemente irrelevante que, sin embargo, será de vital importancia para entender la España del siglo veinte; un animal de tierras lejanas que se convertirá en un símbolo de la Segunda República española, del movimiento comunista y de muchas otras cosas; una caza real que marca el comienzo de una extraña historia de celos, pasión, intrigas políticas y taxidermia.
