Matsuko fue asesinada a los 53 años cerca de un río próximo a su apartamento. Un sobrino suyo investiga el caso y va reconstruyendo los episodios de la desgraciada vida de su tía. Estuvo nominada a nueve premios de la Academia de Cine Japonesa (director, actriz, sonido, banda sonora, iluminación, dirección artística, guión, montaje y fotografía) y obtuvo tres: mejor actriz (Miki Nakatani), mejor montaje (Yoshiyuki Koike) y mejor BSO (Gabriele Roberto & Takeshi Shibuya).
