Nueva York, 1942. Leon Bernstein es el mejor fotógrafo de sucesos de la ciudad, sobre todo porque consigue llegar al lugar del crimen al mismo tiempo que la policía. Sus fotos siempre muestran el horror y el pánico que los demás desean ver. Cuando la atractiva viuda Kay Levitz, propietaria de un elegante club nocturno, le pide ayuda contra la mafia, que la presiona con las deudas de su difunto marido para que venda su negocio, Bernstein accede.
