Un artista que trabaja en clubs nocturnos, tras una desenfrenada orgía con una muchacha, se ve obligado a actuar sólo en tugurios de mala muerte. Acuciado por las deudas, decide trasladarse a Chicago y cambiar su nombre por el de Mickey One. Allí, su agente George Berson le consigue una prueba en el lujoso club Xanadú. Sin embargo, Mickey, asustado por su pasado y por las fuertes deudas contraídas en el juego, decide rechazar la prueba que lo podría sacar de la miseria.
