Cuarenta directores internacionales aceptaron la idea de hacer un cortometraje utilizando el cinematógrafo original inventado por los hermanos Lumière y trabajando en condiciones similares a las de 1895. Además, debían cumplir tres condiciones: la película no debía superar los 52 segundos, no podía tener más de tres tomas, y la sincronización del sonido no estaba permitida.
