El soldado Ernie Williams tiene un asombroso parecido con el general MacKenzie-Smith, lo cual le lleva a hacer algunas parodias ante sus camaradas que no pasan desapercibidas para el alto mando. Estando amenazado de muerte el general, la idea de los jefes del ejército es la de hacer pasar al pobre Ernie por general y así preservar al verdadero. Ernie se las debe ingeniar para salvar el pellejo, lo cual le lleva a situaciones de gran comicidad.
