Tras una brillante temporada en Broadway, el famoso actor John Sheridan se dispone a estrenar una nueva obra del escritor Paul Taylor. Kim Walker, una aspirante a actriz que trabaja como camarera, consigue que el actor le firme un autógrado, aunque lo que realmente ha firmado es una carta de recomendación dirigida al productor.
