La infancia no fue un camino de rosas para George Jorgensen. Los niños del colegio se divertían con cosas que él simplemente aborrecía. Con el paso de los años, sus problemas de identidad sexual se vuelven cada vez más acusados; emocionalmente es una mujer pero físicamente es un hombre. Después de un desagradable incidente con uno de sus jefes, George contacta con el profesor Estabrook, que le enseña que el sexo es una cuestión química y que muchas desviaciones sexuales pueden ser corregidas con tratamientos hormonales.
