Desde 1974, en una radio americana se emite el programa "A prairie home companion", un show de variedades para toda la familia que incluye música en directo, anuncios ficticios y una serie protagonizada por el detective Guy Noir. Un día, de repente, el presentador y sus invitados se enteran de que están haciendo el último programa.
